The Silent Help

Lift one burden your partner carries and let their relief—not recognition—be the reward.

Dāna begins where the private scoreboard ends. This practice asks you to contribute because generosity is the person you choose to be, not because your partner has earned a favor.

The task should be ordinary and genuinely useful: fill the gas tank, prepare the coffee, move the laundry, pack a lunch, or complete the errand they have been carrying in their head.

  1. Notice one burden your partner repeatedly handles or quietly dislikes.
  2. Complete it fully, including the planning and cleanup. Do not announce it or leave clues designed to collect praise.
  3. When the urge to be noticed appears, pause and name it privately: “That is the ledger.” Let the urge pass.
  4. Later, write one sentence about how giving without credit changed the atmosphere inside you.
  • What made this gift useful to your partner rather than merely convenient for you?
  • What did you feel when no praise arrived immediately?
  • Where else does an invisible ledger appear in your relationship?

Their peace is enough. Let the act be complete without a receipt.
